About Martial Arts

Our martial arts program provides a special opportunity for children & youth with special healthcare needs between the ages 3-21 years old. The classes provide instruction on basic martial arts techniques and listening skills. Coordination of movement, balance, body awareness, strength, and thought are also incorporated. This program provides children with an opportunity for positive peer interactions and promotes a sense of independence, confidence, and belonging.

Description of Classes

What is TaeKwonDo? Our NEW TaeKwonDo program focuses on listening, respect, and self-control while incorporating energizing Taekwondo drills and techniques. This program is great for children requiring individual attention to follow directions, adhering to a strict routine, and breaking skills into short tasks. Children may also need physical support or modifications for physical challenges and/or motor planning.

What is Jiu Jitsu? Jiu Jitsu focuses on self-defense aspects of martial arts, including grappling and ground fighting techniques, body positioning, take-downs, physical fitness, and character building.

What is Karate? Karate is primarily a striking art, focusing on punching, kicking, and open-hand techniques. It promotes self-awareness, energy, focus, performance, and control.

Mighty Ninjas: This is an advanced martial arts program for youth with special needs. It is designed to focus on Karate forms, choreographed weaponry forms and basic grappling defenses for escaping attacks. Techniques will be practiced through games and drills. This is a fast paced class and requires the students to have achieved fundamental physical skills for more complex drills. Students in this group must follow multi-step directions given from Wazir (instructor). Students must be able to control strength and balance while completing advanced footwork incorporating hand-eye and foot-eye coordination with other students

Participants are assigned 1:1 to volunteers for additional safety supervision & attention. Classes are 30-45 minutes long, one time per week, for a 7 week session. Sessions are offered four times per year: Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall.
